Classical ideas of tragedy( all assuming the protagonist is a male)
The three units: the play will take over the course of one day, in one place and with one plot focus.
The main protagonist must be the character of high social status.
He will have a fatal flaw(hamartia) that will lead to his downfall. He himself will lead to his downfall.
The tragic hero will meet his nemesis.
The protagonist will display hubris.
The audience will feel both pity and fear for the protagonist.
The audience will pity the hero as there is something to admire in the character.
The downfall of the hero will be inevitable from the start of the play.
The hero will experience a complete and sudden fall from their high status (peripatetia)
The hero will experience a tragic realisation of the mistakes they’ve made (anagnorisis)
The audience will experience catharsis at the denouement(end) of the play.
