Listening
Active process requiring focus, attention, and understanding.
Hearing
Passive and physiological process.
Empathic Listening
Listening to understand a person's feelings and emotions, showing care and reflecting their emotional experience.
Silent Listening
Staying physically and mentally present without interrupting or speaking—used to show attentiveness.
Questioning
Asking clarifying or probing questions to better understand the speaker’s message.
Paraphrasing
Restating the speaker’s message in your own words to confirm understanding.
Empathizing
Understanding and sharing another person's feelings, showing you 'get' their emotional state.
Supporting
Offering comfort, encouragement, or reassurance to the speaker.
Analyzing
Offering your interpretation or perspective on what the speaker has said.
Evaluating
Judging or assessing the speaker’s message, possibly giving approval or disapproval.
Advising
Offering a suggestion or recommendation to help the speaker solve a problem.
Listenable Message
A message that is clear, structured, and easy to understand without confusion or jargon.
Distorted Listening
Misinterpreting or selectively hearing based on personal biases or expectations.
Eavesdropping
Listening to conversations not intended for you—unethical and violates privacy.
Aggressive Listening
Listening only to attack, argue, or criticize the speaker.
Narcissistic Listening
Turning the conversation to yourself instead of focusing on the speaker.
Pseudo-listening
Pretending to listen while your mind is elsewhere.
