Ethnicity
Refers to a group of people who share a common cultural heritage, language, ancestry, or traditions.
Culture
Share beliefs, customs, language, and behaviors of A group.
A way a group of people live think communicate and relate to the world around them.
Cultural diversity
Variety of culture or ethnic groups within society
Includes ways of thinking behaving, and understanding the world
Each Cultural group may view health, illness, and treatment differently

Bias
A preference for or against a person, group, or idea often without realizing it
Bias can lead to unequal care or unintentional, disrespect
May cause us to spend more time show more patience, or give better explanations to some patients over others.
Why does bias matter?
Explicit bias
Conscious intentional, beliefs, or attitudes towards a group

Unconscious automatic assumptions about a group
Prejudice
Negative attitude towards a person or group formed without adequate knowledge based on feeling feelings and stereotypes

Ethnocentrism
The tendency to view one’s own culture as right and other cultures as wrong or inferior.
Judging a patient’s religious practices
Disapproving of a patient’s use of home remedies
Examples of ethnocentrism
Stereotype
General idea of assumption about a group that is unfairly applied to individuals in that group
Belief that everyone in a group act the same way without getting to know the individual
Racism
Belief that one race is inherently , superior or inferior to others
Discrimination
Unjust or prejudicial treatment of individual based on certain characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation
Cultural competency
Possessing a set of attitudes, congruent behaviors, and policies and enabling effective work and cross, cultural environment
