H2 / Pd-C
Heterogeneous catalyst that provides syn addition, reducing alkenes to alkanes and alkynes to alkenes or alkanes, while not reducing esters, carboxylic acids, or amides.
Syn addition
A type of addition where both substituents add to the same face of a double or triple bond.
H2 / Pt-C
Heterogeneous catalyst similar to Pd/C but used for more hindered substrates, reducing alkenes and alkynes to alkanes, and often aldehydes and ketones under pressure.
H2 / Pd-CaCO3 (Lindlar's catalyst)
Poisoned catalyst that selectively reduces alkynes to cis-alkenes without over-reduction and does not reduce alkenes or carbonyls.
NaNH3 (Birch reduction)
A dissolving metal reaction that leads to anti addition, reducing alkynes to trans-alkenes and partially reducing aromatic rings.
Raney Ni
Heterogeneous catalyst used in a H2 atmosphere for the hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes, effective for desulfurization and general hydrogenation.
Desulfurization
The process of removing sulfur from a compound, often using catalysts like Raney Ni.
Anti addition
A method of addition where substituents are added to opposite sides of a double or triple bond.
Cis-alkene
An alkene where the substituents are on the same side of the double bond.
Trans-alkene
An alkene where the substituents are on opposite sides of the double bond.
