chewing/swallowing

manipulates food for chewing and swallowing; a taste organ

papillae

the tiny raised protrusions on the tongue that contain taste buds

hard palate

allows free tongue movement and provides floor for nasal cavity so it isn't closed off

soft palate

to aid speech, swallowing, and breathing

salivary glands

produces saliva, to start the digestive enzymes

esophagus

muscular tube that moves food from the pharynx to the stomach

cardiac sphincter

preventing food from regurgitating from the stomach back into the esophagus

stomach

digests food

pyloric sphincter

controls the movement of the partially digested food particles from the stomach to the duodenum

liver

regulation of metabolic functions, storage of glycogen+iron, drug detoxification, secretion of lipid-digesting bile, synthesis of vitamin D

stores bile and releases it into the small intestine when needed

bile duct

passes bile from the gall bladder to the duodenum during digestion

Mesentry

structural membrane in the intestine/stomach

the fine peritoneal membrane that holds everything in the stomach/small intestine in place
