Characteristics of Living Things
Made up of one or more cells, have cellular organization, use energy, maintain homeostasis, grow and develop, respond to stimuli, change or evolve over time, and are able to reproduce.
Asexual Reproduction
The production of new plant with only one parent, forming genetically identical plants that are similar to their parent plants.
Apomixis
A type of asexual reproduction that produces seeds without fertilization, ensuring offspring are well-suited to their environment.
Fragmentation
A process of vegetative propagation involving the separation of a plant part from its parent plant.
Regeneration
The development of a separated plant part into a new plant.
Natural Vegetative Propagation
When plants grow from specialized leaves, roots, or stems without human intervention.
Artificial Vegetative Propagation
When a plant's growth requires human intervention.
Adventitious Roots
Roots that grow from the stem or leaves when they touch the soil, leading to the growth of new plants.
Rhizomes
Underground stems that grow horizontally, examples include ginger and lotus.
Tubers
Swollen, underground stems containing axillary buds on the scale leaves or scars present on the stem, examples include potato and turnip.
