Decontamination
The first step in the prevention of transmission of pathogens, involving cleaning and disinfecting contaminated items.
Enzymatic Solution
A solution that aids in breaking down organic material, such as proteins and fats, to facilitate cleaning surgical instruments.
Chelation
The process of binding materials like iron and magnesium in solution to prevent their deposits on instrument surfaces.
Emulsification
The action of dispersing two liquids that are incapable of being mixed.
Ultrasonic Cleaner
A cleaning device that uses high-frequency sound waves to create vibrations that dislodge debris from instrument surfaces.
Biologic Indicator (BI)
A device containing a specific microorganism that is killed when exposed to sterilizing conditions, verifying the effectiveness of sterilization.
Gravity Displacement Sterilizer
A sterilizer that relies on gravity to remove air from the sterilizer chamber before steam enters.
Dynamic Air Removal Sterilizer
A sterilizer that uses a vacuum pump to remove air more efficiently than gravity displacement.
Chemical Indicator
A device used to visually show whether sterilization conditions have been met, without confirming sterility.
Sterile Packaging Performance Standards
Guidelines ensuring that packaging materials maintain sterility and allow for effective sterilization.
Steam Sterilization
A method utilizing moist heat under pressure to destroy all microorganisms, including spores.
Powered Instruments
Instruments such as saws and drills that require special cleaning methods and cannot be submerged in cleaning solutions.
Lumen
A hollow part or cavity within a tubular organ or structure, such as in certain endoscopic instruments.
Manual Cleaning Process
The method that involves using lukewarm water, detergent, and soft-bristled brushes to remove debris from instruments.
Bioburden
The number of viable microorganisms on a product or surface, which must be effectively managed in medical device cleaning.
Event-related sterility
The principle that sterility is maintained until the package is opened or compromised.
Sterilization Parameters
Conditions such as temperature, pressure, moisture, and time that must be adhered to for effective sterilization.
