Nucleus
controls the center of the cell and stores DNA
Cell Membrane
thin structure that surrounds the cell; protects the cell, gives it its shape and lets material in and out
Mitochondria
powerhouse of the cell, turns food into energy
Ribosomes
this is where proteins are made; they are the small dots on the Rough ER
Lysosomes
garbage disposal; gets rid of waste
Golgi Apparatus/Body
post office; proteins are sent here to be packaged and transported out of the cell
Cytoplasm
gel-like material where most of the cell's activities take place; soup of the cell
Vacuoles
storage bin; they store food and waste
endoplasmic reticulum
transports materials around the cell
cell wall
outer layer found in plant cells that provides extra protection and support
chloroplast
green organelle found in plant cells that converts sunlight into sugars
Plant cell
Larger vacuole, chloroplasts, cell wall, rectangular in shape
Animal cell
small vacuole, less rigid shape
Nerve cell
Specialized animal cell that gathers information and sends it to and from the brain
Sperm Cell
Specialized animal cell that must swim to the egg and fertilize it.
Red Blood Cell
Specialized animal cell that carries oxygen to every part of the body.
