Pure Substance
A material with a constant composition and consistent properties throughout.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances where each substance retains its own properties.
Atom
The smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element.
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Subscript
A number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol indicating the number of atoms of that element.
Coefficient
A number placed in front of a chemical formula indicating how many molecules are present.
Law of Conservation of Mass
A principle stating that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction; it is conserved.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together.
Counting Atoms
The process of determining the number of each atom present in a chemical formula.
Phase Changes
Transitions between solid, liquid, and gas states of matter due to temperature and pressure changes.
