What is the Domesday Book?
A detailed survey of England that recorded who owned land , its size , how many people live there, and what resources were available (like animals , mills , and fields). It was called ‘Domesday’ because it was as final as the Last Judgement - there was no appeal.
What was the purpose of the Domesday Book?
Allowed William to asses taxes fairly and plan resources for the kingdom. This helped him keep track of who owned land and ensured his barons were paying their dues.
What was good about the Domesday book?
It weakened the north for many years , reducing its population and making it easier for William to control the country.
What was bad about the Domesday Book?
The Domesday Book was finished after William’s death , and it quickly became out of date as land ownership and resources changed. It didn’t affect ordinary people much, as they continued to live there live as they had before.
