What is meant by monotropy?
The idea that an infant has one specific attachment that is different to and more important.

What is the law of continuity?
The more constant a child's care, the better the quality of the attachment.
What is the law of accumulated separation?
Separation from the mother adds up so none at all is best.
What is the Internal Working Model?
A mental representation of our attachment to our primary caregiver which forms a base for future attachments.
Limitations
- Attachments aren't monotropic - Schaffer & Emerson's multiple attachments
- Other influences on attachment other than internal working model - anxiety and sociability of an individual affects parenting
Strengths
+ Research support for social releasers - Brazelton found that when parents ignored babies social releasers, babies became distressed
+ Research support for internal working model - Bailey found that mothers attachment to their own mother carried through onto their attachment with their babies
