1st degree burn
top layer, skin red and dry, lasts 5 to 6 days, no scars (sunburn, curling iron, etc.)
2nd degree burn
red, blisters, painful, often swells, takes 3 to 4 weeks to heal (car muffler)
3rd degree burn
destroys all the layers and tissues underneath, sometimes destroys bones, looks brown or blackish, can be pain free (house fire, vehicle, etc.)

Damage to soft tissues and blood vessels causes bleeding under the skin
