• New Nixon focus to win out on the south

• Not trying for the black vote and other minorities, heavily appeal to the “silent majority”, tear down liberal systems such as Warren Court + campus demonstrations

Henry Kissinger

• Secretary of State

• He and Nixon dominated foreign policy, shutting out even the highest-ranking chair members

• Both men very paranoid and power focued, but still worked together well on China, Russia, and other forgien policy

• However the two did abuse consistutional power, such as secret bombing of Cambodia

detente

• Means the easing of tensions

• Refers to Nixon meeting with Mao Zedong, creating trade deals and recognizing China

• As well with Russia, as seen with the Moscow Summit and Arms Treaty 

• Used the two to pit them off each other, increasing tension/suspition between the two 

Kent St

• Shooting by Ohio National Guard against the anti-war student protests at Kent State

• 4 dead + 9 injured 

• The students were peaceful, even unclear if it would be constitutional to break up the crowd peacefully in the first place

• Acclimation and most brutal act against protestors, yet failed to trigger any movement

Woodstock

• Concert in upstante New York

• biggest display of counter-culure of the 1960’s

• In ways, counter culture became a market rather than an escape from materialism

• greater consesous that the whole system was destroyed and there was no reason to try and repear

COINTELPRO

• Program run by the FBI under I Edgar Hoover

• involved the spying and disruption on groups seen as “dangerous” to America

• Inolved minority movemnet groups, such as Black Pathers and Native American groups

• also involved spying on MLK and trying to use sex tapes to weaken credibilty

• Sought to completely annilate minority power groups throgh violence, assaination, arrests, and spys

My Lai

• Massacre committed by US platoon on the Vietnamese village of My Lai

• significant in that it shows for the troops lacked much value of Vietnamese life, did not care to try and decipher Vietcong from average farmer

Woodward and Bernstein

• two writers for the Washington Post

• kept the story around the Watergate burglary around and alive, even when no one else was discussing it

• had a source from high up in FBI

• showed the role of the press and the people in checking the power of the president, however also an example of luck

James McCord

• One of the burgerlers involved in the original Watergate robbery

• Wrote a letter to the judge admitting that the conspiracy goes much deeping and higher 

• rejuvinated the Watergate scandal, allowing for investigations to arise to look into the Executive branch

Howard Hunt

• former CIA officer and member of the plumbers

• he recruited and orchestrated the Watergate Scandal

• Also aided in former operations including of Ellsburg’s phycyatrist

Daniel Ellsberg

• Man who leaked the Pentagon Papers: which revealed united states’ actions and policy toward Vietnam across several presidents

• Was a target for the plumbers who ransacked his psychiatrist’s office in an attempt to embarrass him and find discrediting notes

John Ehrlichman

• A part of the Watergate scandal and important to the pumbers 

• Following Watergate, he became one of the largest defenders of the Executive branch and practically a scapegoat for the entire scandal to forget itself on
