Ethnicity
Identity with a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth.
Race
Identity with a group of people who are perceived to share a physiological trait such as skin color.
Nationality
Identity with a group of people who share legal attachment to a particular country.
Ethnic Enclave
A place with a high concentration of an ethnic group that is distinct from those in the surrounding area.
Chain Migration
The social process by which immigrants from a particular place follow others from that place to a new destination.
Blockbusting
Real estate practice where agents convince white homeowners to sell their homes at low prices, promoting racial transition in neighborhoods.
Centripetal Force
An attitude that unifies people and enhances support for a state.
Balkanization
Process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among its ethnicities.
Genocide
Mass killing of a group of people in an attempt to eliminate the entire group from existence.
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States.
Triangular Slave Trade
Historical trade system where slaves were transported from Africa to the Americas, raw materials from the Americas to Europe, and goods from Europe to Africa.
Apartheid
A policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race, notably in South Africa.
Ethnic Cleansing
Purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group.
De Facto Segregation
Segregation that occurs without laws but rather through social norms and practices.
Forced Migration
Involuntary movement of a person or persons away from their home or home region.
Indigenous Groups
Ethnic groups that are the original inhabitants of a region, often having distinct languages and cultural traditions.
