What do the cricotracheal membrane and hyoid bone provide?
Circotracheal membrane and hyoid bone provide supportive framework for larynx
cricotracheal membrane
ligament secures the larynx to top of trachea
hyoid bone
U-shaped bone located above larynx, attaches to larynx via membrane and ligaments
why Is the hyoid bone unique?
Only bone in body not attached to another bone
- Located along or suspended in muscular sling
- Larynx made up of cartilage not bones
What is the result of the hyoid bone being unique?
can be pulled in 3 direction by muscles (ultimately moving larynx in these directions)
what are the 3 directions the hyoid bone can be pulled by muscles
forward and up
back and up
downward
---> also involved with tongue and mandible
what does the supportive framework do?
1) secures larynx in place and 2) allows for variety of movements
