Health (World Health Organization definition)
Health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity but a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being.
Physical health
The aspect involving body functions, physical fitness, and minimal exposure to physical harms (e.g., smoking, environmental pollution).
Social health
One's well-being in interactions with others; ability to maintain relationships and perform social roles effectively without harming others.
Intellectual health
Ability to think clearly, reason objectively, analyze critically, and remain open to new ideas and challenges.
Emotional health
Ability to recognize, understand, and manage a range of emotions; includes self-esteem and self-confidence.
Spiritual health
Ability to balance inner needs with worldly demands and find meaning and purpose in life.
Environmental health
Appreciation of the role in preserving and protecting environmental conditions and protecting oneself from environmental hazards.
Wellness
The dynamic, ever-changing process of striving to achieve potential in each of the six health dimensions, resulting in optimal health and vitality.
Health status continuum
Health exists on a continuum, not a binary; individuals can move toward higher wellness or lower health depending on factors and behaviors.
Infectious disease
A disease caused by pathogens that can be transmitted from one person to another.
Pathogen
An organism such as a virus or bacteria that causes disease.
Communicable
Capable of being transmitted from one person to another.
Chronic degenerative disease
Long-lasting diseases that tend to worsen over time; lack a single definitive cause and are influenced by risk factors.
Risk factors
Lifestyle choices or conditions that increase the likelihood of developing a disease and can often be changed.
Social determinants of health
Conditions in the environment where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect health outcomes.
Determinants of health
Factors that influence health status, including genetics, healthcare access, and social/environmental conditions.
Collaboration
Group leadership quality involving working together respectfully to leverage diverse talents.
Shared purpose
Common goals and reasons for group effort; what needs to be changed and why.
Accountability
Clear assignment of responsibilities with commitment to meet goals and be answerable for outcomes.
Self-knowledge
Awareness of one’s beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions and how they motivate change.
