Sensory memory

Receives information through senses, duration of ¼ - 4 seconds, info is lost unless we pay attention to it

Short term memory

Long term memory

Capacity and duration are potentially unlimited, codes semantically, info transferred here through repetition or elaborative retrieval

Capacity of STM. Used digit pan technique where ppts asked to recall string of digits progressively get longer, found average 9.3 digits and 7.3 letters recalled so STM capacity 7± 2 chunks

Shepherd 1967

Duration of LTM, showed ppts 612 images then asked to identify hour later with new images, found 100% at 1 hr and 50% at 4 months show LTM longer than STM
