What are the types of memory storage
Short term, long term, sensory
What are the characteristics of memory
Coding, duration, capacity
What are the type of coding
Acoustic, semantic, visible
Sensory memory
Receives information through senses, duration of ¼ - 4 seconds, info is lost unless we pay attention to it
Short term memory
Capacity 7±2 chunks of information, duration 18-20 sec, codes acoustically, info retained through maintinence rehearsal otherwise decay or displace
Long term memory
Capacity and duration are potentially unlimited, codes semantically, info transferred here through repetition or elaborative retrieval
What are STM and LTM.
Unitary
Multi-store model
Atkinson and schiffin 1968, simplifies the brain functions to a simple flow diagram, first model of memory
Peterson and Peterson 1959
Duration of STM, gave ppts consonant triad to recall after retention interval which increased, found 90% correct 3 sec only 2% correct 18 sec
Baddeley 1966
Coding STM and LTM, read acoustically/semantically similar and dissimilar words then shed ppt to recall short term and long term, found STM acoustic as immediate poor and LTM semantic as later poor
Jacobs 1887
Capacity of STM. Used digit pan technique where ppts asked to recall string of digits progressively get longer, found average 9.3 digits and 7.3 letters recalled so STM capacity 7± 2 chunks
Shepherd 1967
Duration of LTM, showed ppts 612 images then asked to identify hour later with new images, found 100% at 1 hr and 50% at 4 months show LTM longer than STM
