heat

a form of energy that is transferred between objects or systems

2
New cards

Specific heat capacity

the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1°C

3
New cards

Law of Conservation of Energy

states that energy is neither lost or gained, it is just transferred from one form to another.

4
New cards

Calorimeter

a device used to calculate specific heat capacities, masses, and energy

5
New cards

Calorie

the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°

Define Kinetic Molecular Theory

Robert Brown observed pollen grains in water under a microscope. He observed that they moved in random jittery motions but could not explain why. At the time, microscopes were not good enough to explain why. Along came Albert Einstein. In 1905 he helped prove mathematically the kinetic molecular theory.

Describe Heat Energy

Thermal energy is transferred via conduction. Heat causes molecules to vibrate. The vibrating molecule then bumps into another directly touching. Vibrating molecules cause heat

14
New cards

Describe the Law of Conservation of Energy

Ex. energy from the sun-> energy in food->use the energy to move, breathe, etc…->loss through sweat, heat leaving body, etc…
