Physical barriers to communication
Tangible obstacles in the environment that hinder effective communication, such as closed doors, walls, distance, and external noises; key factors include environment, distance, and ignorance of the medium.
Cultural barriers to communication
Barriers arising from cultural differences or ignorance that hinder interaction; examples include generational and geographical differences; require finding common ground to resolve.
Psychological barriers to communication
Barriers stemming from the mental state of communicators (e.g., stress or anger) that affect how messages are sent, received, and interpreted.
Systematic barriers to communication
Barriers created by organizational structures or information systems, inefficient channels, or unclear roles and responsibilities that impede clear communication.
Attitudinal barriers to communication
Barriers resulting from personal attitudes (e.g., personality conflicts, resistance to change, lack of motivation) that obstruct effective communication; receivers should overcome their own barriers.
Interpersonal barriers to communication
Barriers arising in two-way interactions, such as a lack of desire to participate or unwillingness to explore differing ideas, leading to communication breakdowns.
