Sarcopenia
An age-related syndrome characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength.
Progressive Overload
The gradual increase of stress placed on the body during resistance training.
Functional Resistance Training
Training that enhances the performance of movements to make activities of daily living easier.
1 Repetition Maximum (1-RM)
The maximal weight a person can lift for one single repetition.
Myonuclei
The nuclei found within muscle cells that increase in number with muscle fiber hypertrophy.
Isometric Contractions
Muscle contractions where there is no change in muscle length, effective for strength training.
Eccentric Contractions
A type of dynamic contraction where the muscle elongates under tension, highly effective for strength gains.
Anecdotal Postural Control
Activating postural muscles before a lift to maintain balance.
Endurance
The ability of a muscle or group of muscles to continue exerting force over an extended period.
Hypertrophy
The increase in the size of muscle cells.
Specificity Principle
The concept that training adaptations are specific to the types of exercise performed.
Connective Tissue Strength
The increased strength of tendons and ligaments as a result of resistance training.
Anaerobic Energy Systems
Energy systems that provide immediate energy for short bursts of high-intensity activities.
Capillaries
Small blood vessels that increase in number with muscle growth, enhancing blood flow.
Biopsychosocial Adaptations
Adaptations that affect multiple systems including physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
