Cutaneous wounds
Injuries to the skin that require management and treatment, including chronic and acute wounds.
Chronic wound
A wound that does not heal through normal healing pathways; may require specialized attention.
Acute wound
A low-risk, uncomplicated wound that is likely to heal; typically follows normal healing pathways.
Wound debridement
The removal of dead or nonviable tissue from a wound to promote healing.
Ankle brachial index (ABI)
A measurement that compares blood pressure in the ankle with blood pressure in the arm to assess peripheral arterial disease.
Therapeutic modalities
Techniques used to enhance wound healing, such as hydrotherapy and electrical stimulation.
Local infection control
Measures taken to prevent infection in a localized area, particularly in wound management.
Moist wound healing
An approach to wound care that keeps the wound environment moist to enhance healing.
Therapeutic surfaces
Specialized surfaces used to prevent pressure sores, involving the use of pressure-relieving mattresses and cushions.
Pain assessment
The evaluation of pain intensity, quality, and timing in the context of wound care.
Nociceptive pain
Normal pain sensation associated with physical trauma to the skin.
Neuropathic pain
Pain that arises from nerve damage; can manifest as abnormal sensations.
Moisture balance
Maintaining an appropriate level of moisture in a wound environment to aid healing.
Integumentary system
The organ system that includes the skin, hair, and nails, significant in wound healing.
Capillary refill
A quick test to assess blood circulation by measuring the time it takes for color to return to an area after pressure is applied.
Pressure ulcer
Localized injury to the skin or underlying tissue due to pressure, often found over bony prominences.
Venous insufficiency
A condition where veins fail to circulate blood properly, often leading to ulcers.
Risk factor
An aspect that increases the likelihood of developing a condition, such as pressure ulcers.
Moisture-associated skin damage (MASD)
Skin damage that occurs due to prolonged moisture exposure, increasing pressure ulcer risk.
Wound exudate
Fluid that leaks out of blood vessels into surrounding tissues, often found in wounds.
Objective measurements in wound assessment
Quantitative methods used to evaluate the size, depth, circulation, and healing progress of wounds.
Tissue management (TIME principle)
An approach for managing wounds that includes tissue management, infection control, moisture balance, and edge advancement.
Manual tracing of the wound
A technique where the outline of the wound is traced to accurately measure its area.
Chronic venous disease
A condition characterized by impaired blood flow in the veins, often leading to venous ulcers.
