What is an ionic bond?
Chemical bond formed by transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal, making positively charged cations and negatively charged anions
Why do ionic bonds form?
To have a full outer electrons shell and create stable electron configurations
What is a Binary ionic compound
Compound made of two elements, a metal cation and non-metal anion bonded by ionic bonds
How are binary ionic compounds formed?
Through the transfer of electrons from metal to non metal to satisy octet rule
What types of elements typically form ionic bonds?
Metals and non-metals
What ions do Group 1 and 2 elements form?
Group 1, +1
Group 2, +2
What ions do Groups 15-17 form?
Group 15, -3
Group 16, -2
Group 17, -1
Why use Roman numerals in some ionic names?
Show charge of transition metals
Properties of ionic compounds?
High melting/boiling point
solid/crystaline
conducts electricity in solution
Brittle
