What are the three reasons for conservation?
economic, social and ethical
what’s conservation?
An active management of an ecosystem to maintain its habitat
What are the economic reasons for conservation?
promotes ecotourism and drug development
What are the social reasons for conservation?
provides activities with others
Whats the ethical reasons for conservation?
prevents extinction of endangered species and conserves biodiversity for future generations
Whats preservation?
protecting an ecosystem by resisting or banning humans from it to maintain its original state
Whats ecosystem managment?
When humans use or manage an ecosystems natural resources sustainably
Whats sustainability?
meeting the needs of people today without reducing the ability for future generations to meet their needs
How’s timber production sustainably managed?
coppicing, clear felling, selective felling, rotational felling, pollarding and strip felling
Whats coppicing?
When a trees trunk is cut close to ground level rather than cut completely so the shoots can regrow
What are the benefits of coppicing?
increases trees lifespan, allows for a variety of light levels which increases plant biodiversity and allows the growth of new shoots which increases timber production
Whats clear felling?
When all trees from a forrest area is removed
What are the steps taken to ensure clear felling is sustainable?
limiting size of the felled area, replacing felled trees, limit soil erosion, keep minimum distance between replanted trees, allow replanted trees to fully regrow between clear felling
What are the measures to ensure fishing is sustainable?
fishing quotas, mesh size limitations, species restrictions to protect endangered species, limits on trawler sizes of reduce the number of fish caught and regular catch inspections to enforce measures
Whats are the issues with managing fishing?
areas are too large, false reporting of caught fish number and catch inspections are expensive
