Tax
A compulsory payment to the government.
Revenue Commissioners (Tax collector)
State agency responsibilities for collecting tax on behalf of the government.
Direct tax
Any tax which is based on your income. E.g. PAYE
Indirect tax
Any tax on goods or services you purchase. E.g. VAT
Capital Acquisitions Tax
Paid by those receiving gifts/inheritances such as money or land.
Capital Gains Tax
A tax on the profit made from the sale of an asset.
Customs Duty
A tax on goods coming into Ireland outside of the EU.
Deposit Interest Retention Tax
A tax on the interest earned on savings held with a financial institution.
Excise Duty
Tax added to the price of certain good such as tabaco, petrol, diesel and alcohol.
Pay As You Earn
Income tax deducted from employee pay.
Local Property Tax
Paid by owners of residential property. Based off market value of house.
Motor Tax
Must be paid by owners of motor cars. Illegal to not pay.
Stamp Duty
Charged on the use of certain items such as credit and debit cards and o the transfer of property. E.g. Buying a house.
Universal Social Charge
Additional tax paid on gross income over €13’000. National debt.
Value Added Tax
Paid by consumers on goods + services. 23%
