Reproduction
Biological process where new individual organisms of the same species (offspring) are prouduced
Two types of Reproduction
Asexual Reproduction
Sexual Reproduction
Asexual Reproduction
New individuals formed by only 1 parent
Sexual Reproduction
New individual being formed from 2 parents
Cell division used in sexual reproduction
Meiosis
Gametes
Sex cells produced by parents (e.g ova and sperm)
Sexual Reproduction Advantages
Produces variation in offspring
Selective Breeding
Sexual reproduction disadvantages
Two parents required
Time consuming and costs energy → less offspring produced in life time
Asexual Reproduction advantages
Only 1 parent needed
Uses less energy
Faster process
In fabourable conditions identicle offspring can be produced
Asexual reproduction disadvantages
Organisms produced have shorter life span
Hard to control the increasing population
Limited diversity in offspring
Since the offspring produced is a clone, any harmful mutation will also pass onto the offspring
