Villanelle Poetry Structure
19 Lines Total
5 Tercets (3 line stanzas)
1 quadrant (4 line stanzas)
Will have refrain: repeating phrases, words, lines
First and third line of the opening tercet will be repeated alternately in the last lines of the following stanzas and recur in the poem’s final two lines. (Dont Go Gentle)

Lyric:
A short, emotionally expressive poem with a songlike quality that is narrated in the first person
There is no plot/ characters/ story in Lyrics.
This is a telling/ recollections of emotions experienced by the author

Meant to be story-like/ narration
Typically more simple language.
Three types of ballads you may see:
Folk Ballad: traditional ballads that tell stories of love and adventure.
Lyrical Ballad: Utilize the bouncy usage of iambic pentameter to create rhythm; tell stories of everyday life.
Modern Ballad: Narrative songs, less prestigious and literary.
(You probably won’t see Modern Ballads on the AP test)
