Solvent
The majority component of a solution that dissolves the solute.
Solute
The minority component of a solution that is dissolved in the solvent.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that appears to be one substance and contains multiple materials.
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent.
Like Dissolves Like
The principle that a chemical will dissolve in a solvent if it has a similar structure.
Entropy
A measure of energy randomization or dispersal in a system.
Molarity (M)
A concentration unit that describes the amount (in moles) of solute in one liter of solution.
Molality (m)
A concentration unit that describes the amount (in moles) of solute per one kilogram of solvent.
Miscible
Two liquids that are mutually soluble in each other.
Immiscible
Two liquids that do not mix well and remain separate.
Intermolecular Forces
Forces that cause attraction between molecules and are significant in solution formation.
Concentration
The relative amounts of solute and solvent in a solution.
