Job Characteristics Model (JCM)
A model that explains how to design jobs to increase motivation through meaningful, engaging, and satisfying work.
Key elements of JCM
Skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback that enhance motivation, performance, and job satisfaction.
Job Rotation
The practice of moving employees between different tasks or jobs to reduce boredom and increase skills.
Relational Job Design
An approach that helps employees see the impact of their work on others, increasing motivation.
Flextime
A work arrangement where employees can vary their start and end times while working a set number of hours.
Job Sharing
An arrangement where two or more employees share the responsibilities of one full-time job.
Telecommuting (Remote Work)
Working from home, typically for at least two days per week, to improve work-life balance.
Variable-Pay Programs
Compensation systems that tie pay to performance rather than providing a fixed salary.
Employee Recognition Programs
Non-monetary rewards that acknowledge an employee's performance, such as employee of the month or public recognition.
Expectancy Theory
The theory which states that employees are more motivated when the link between performance and reward is clear.
Equity Theory
The theory which posits that employees are motivated by fairness in the rewards they receive for their work.
