Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone produced by the kidneys that is essential for the differentiation of erythrocytes.
Blood plasma
The fluid component of blood, which makes up about 55% of blood volume and is primarily composed of water, proteins, and other solutes.
Hemolysis
The breakdown of red blood cells, resulting in the recycling of components such as iron and the production of bilirubin.
Phagocytosis
The process by which certain cells (like neutrophils and monocytes) engulf and digest foreign particles or pathogens.
Colloid osmotic pressure
The pressure created by proteins in the plasma that helps retain fluid within the blood vessels.
Neutrophils
A type of white blood cell and phagocyte that is the body's first line of defense in an immune response.
Albumins
Major plasma proteins that help maintain oncotic pressure and transport substances in the blood.
