Mixture
A mixture contains two or more pure substances; can be homogeneous or heterogeneous
Pure substance
Substances made up of only one type of particle
Extensive Properties
Properties that do depend on the amount of substance; Not a good differentiating characteristic
Ex: Volume, Mass, Length, Size
Intensive Properties
Properties that do not depend on the amount of the substance; Unique for each substance; Makes a good differentiating characteristic
Ex:
Interpret a heating curve
When temperature is constant (or the slope = 0), there is a phase change occurring. When temperature is increasing, there is no change.
Interpret a cooling curve
When temperature is constant (or the slope = 0), a phase change is occurring. When temperature is decreasing, a phase is cooling and there is no change.
Interpret energy exchange graphs
During a phase change, energy is always exchanged between the system and surroundings.
