Sophocles familiarization

ὡς δ᾽ οἶδα ταῦτα τῇδ᾽ ἔχοντ᾽ ἐγὼ φράσω.

How I know these things to be true, I will tell you.

ἀνὴρ γὰρ ἡμῖν ἐστιν ἐκ Τροίας ἁλούς, Ἕλενος ἀριστόμαντις, ὃς λέγει σαφῶς ὡς δεῖ γενέσθαι ταῦτα.

We have a man captured from Troy, the great oracle, Helenus, who clearly says that these things must happen.

καὶ πρὸς τοῖσδ᾽ ἔτι ὡς ἔστ᾽ ἀνάγκη τοῦ παρεστῶτος θέρους Τροίαν ἁλῶναι πᾶσαν.

And after this, that it is necessary for all of Troy to fall this very summer.

ἢ δίδωσ᾽ ἑκὼν κτείνειν ἑαυτόν, ἢν τάδε ψευσθῇ λέγων.

Otherwise, he willingly offers to kill himself if his words prove false.

ταῦτ᾽ οὖν ἐπεὶ κάτοισθα, συγχώρει θέλων.

Now that you know these things, agree willingly.

καλὴ γὰρ ἡ ’πίκτησις, Ἑλλήνων ἕνα κριθέντ᾽ ἄριστον τοῦτο μὲν παιωνίας ἐς χεῖρας ἐλθεῖν, εἶτα τὴν πολύστονον Τροίαν ἑλόντα κλέος ὑπέρτατον λαβεῖν.

For it is a noble thing, judged as the best among the Greeks, to come to healing hands, and then to capture sorrowful Troy and achieve the highest fame.

ὦ στυγνὸς αἰών, τί με, τί δῆτ᾽ ἔχεις ἄνω βλέποντα κοὐκ ἀφῆκας εἰς Ἅιδου μολεῖν;

Oh, hateful life, why do you hold me, looking up at the sky, and not allow me to go down to Hades?

οἴμοι, τί δράσω; πῶς ἀπιστήσω λόγοις τοῖς τοῦδ᾽, ὃς εὔνους ὢν ἐμοὶ παρῄνεσεν;

Alas, what shall I do? How can I distrust the words of this man, who advises me with goodwill?
