Sequence of Food Journey

Step 1

Mouth – food is chewed (mechanical) and mixed with saliva (chemical)

Step 2

Pharynx – pushes food into the esophagus

Step 3

Esophagus – moves food to the stomach using peristalsis

Step 4

Stomach – churns food and mixes it with acid and enzymes (mechanical + chemical)

Step 5

Small intestine – finishes digestion with enzymes, absorbs nutrients

Step 6

Liver/Gallbladder – bile is released to break down fats

Step 7

Pancreas – sends enzymes and bicarbonate to aid digestion

Step 8

Large intestine – absorbs water and forms solid waste

Step 9

Rectum – stores feces

Step 10

Anus – waste exits the body through elimination
