What is waxy cuticle
Epidermis of a plant that has a thick, lipid wax coated to prevent water absorption through leaf
Why is the waxy cuticle important?
It allows water retention when it’s not raining
What is problem with waxy cuticle?
Prevents gas exchange, makes it harder to take in carbon dioxide and harder to release oxygen
How did Embryophyte s fix the problem where waxy cuticles prevent gas exchange?
Gained stomata
What is a stomata ?
Guard cells that allow open enclosure of pores on leaves
What does stomata allow?
Allows water retention, releasing oxygen and taking in carbon dioxide
What can happen if a stomata is left open
Lose water
Major synapamorph of Embryophyte
Egg retain in maternal tissue
Out group of Embryophyte
Bryophyte
Synaphamorph of bryophyte
All non-vascular plants
What do bryophyte not have?
No vascular tissue no circulatory system nor true organs
What does bryophyte rely on
Eliza plasma demo to move water between cells. It is more efficient than osmosis, but they cannot get tall.
