Digital Literacy

computer

imbedded computer

a computer installed within a machine that either controls directly or works as a sub system

laptop

also called a notebook computer, is a thin, lightweight mobile computer with a screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base

tablet

a thin, lighter-weight mobile computer that has a touch screen

desktop

a personal computer designed to be in a stationary location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or table

Server

a computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network

thin client

-most of the software needed is installed on the server and run from there

-requires nothing more than a browser on the client

-does not require installation and administration of client software

Thick Client

All or most of the application logic resides on the client

Mobile computing devices

a computer device small enough to hold in your hand commonly called the electronic babysitter or phone

smartphone

a mobile computing device with internet capability combined with a phone that usually includes apps such as: calendar; appointment book; address book; calculator; note pad; games; etc. Many smartphones include cameras, text messaging and touch screen and, can capture video and pictures and send messages including pictures and videos.

contains keys you press to enter data and instructions into a computer or mobile device

touchpad

a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion

mouse

a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably

The software/hardware that accepts voice commands and translates them into direction for the computer.

light-sensing input device that converts printed text and images into a form the computer can process
