Executive Branch
The branch of government responsible for implementing and enforcing laws.
Enumerated Powers
Powers specifically listed in the Constitution.
Implied Powers
Powers not explicitly stated in the Constitution but necessary for the government to function.
State of the Union Address
An annual address delivered by the President to Congress outlining the condition of the country.
Executive Privilege
The right of the President to keep certain communications private.
War Powers Resolution
A law intended to limit the President's ability to engage in military action without Congressional approval.
Impeachment
The process by which a sitting President can be charged with misconduct.
Bully Pulpit
A public office or position of authority that provides an opportunity to speak out on issues.
Honeymoon Period
The initial period after an election when a President’s popularity is at its peak.
Patronage System
The practice of giving government jobs to political supporters.
Pendleton Act
Legislation that established the merit system for federal employment.
Iron Triangle
A stable, mutually beneficial relationship between government agencies, interest groups, and congressional committees.
Bureaucratic Discretion
The ability of bureaucrats to make choices concerning the best way to implement congressional intentions.
Independent Regulatory Agencies
Agencies created by Congress to regulate specific areas of the economy.
The Hatch Act
A federal law that restricts political activities of government employees.
