Nunc media Aenean secum per moenia ducit,

Now she takes Aeneas with her along the city walls

Sidoniasque ostentat opes urbemque paratam;

and shows him the wealth of Sidon and the city she has prepared;

incipit effari, mediaque in voce resistit;

and she starts to speak out and she stops in mid-sentence;

nunc eadem labente die convivia quaerit,

another time she seeks a same banquet as the day fades

Iliacosque iterum demens audire labores

exposcit,

and once more she foolishly begs to hear about the Ilian struggles

pendetque iterum narrantis ab ore.

and once more hangs from his lips as he tells the story.

Post, ubi digressi, lumenque obscura vicissim

luna premit suadentque cadentia sidera somnos,

Afterwards when they have separated, and the dim moon in turn makes the lamp go and the setting stars suggest sleep,

sola domo maeret vacua, stratisque relictis

incubat,

alone she grieves in an empty home and sleeps upon abandoned covers.

 illum absens absentem auditque videtque;

Absent she sees and hears him in his absence,

aut gremio Ascanium, genitoris imagine capta,

detinet

or charmed by the image of his father on her lap she holds Ascanius,

infandum si fallere possit amorem.

in the hope she could cheat an unmentionable love.

Non coeptae adsurgunt turres, non arma iuventus

exercet, portusve aut propugnacula bello

tuta parant;

The towers which had been begun are not rising, her young men are not training with their weapons or making her harbours or turrets safe in war:

pendent opera interrupta, minaeque

murorum ingentes aequataque machina caelo.

the works are hanging, interrupted, both the huge threatening walls and the cranes as high as the sky.
