The study of the writing forms such as the alphabet, visual style of writing

The study of the forms of words, such as Un-happi-ness. Word building blocks
Orthography
The study of spelling and how letters combine to represent sounds and form words, “color” US vs “colour” UK
Phonology
The study of patterns of sounds in a language and accross languages. The “th” sounds in English doenst exist in many languages
Semantics
The study of the meaning of the words. “star” can mean a celestial body or a famous person. Word meanings
Neuter
Neither male or female in language terms
Lexis
All the words in a language
Language family
A group of languages that are related in structure and which have evolved from a common proto language. “love language family”
Inflection
Any form or change of form which distinguishes gramatical forms of the same lexical unit
Syntax
The sentence construction and order of words in a sentence (syntax is part of the grammer of a language)
Pidgin
A simplified mix of languages, used to communicate between people who do not share the same language. Simplified mix
Pragmatics
The study of the ways in which language is used in its social context. context meaning
Prescriptivism
The view that language should have a strict set of rules that must be obeyed i speech and writing

A common ancestor of modern language. Earliest root language
