oldest sport, started in prehistoric times when people used several skills of survival, over time these skills were developed into individual sports

track and field
other term for athletics, involves a variety of events such as running, walking, throwing, and jumping
track events
an event in athletics that requires the athlete to run or walk around a track
sprint / short distance track events
races over short distances and are one of the oldest track events, focused on athletes reaching and sustaining their quickest possible running speed (100, 200, 400 meter)

middle distance track events
unlike in sprints, runners start from a standing position; stand along a curved starting line to ensure everyone is running the same distance; requires athletes to have good aerobic ability and speed endurance (800, 1500 meter)
long distance track events
similar to a marathon, they take place on a track, as opposed to the street course of a marathon; require a lot of stamina from the athletes (3000, 5000, 15000 meter)
relay track events
the only track event where teams race against other teams; teams are made up of four runners of the same sex. each runner has their own section of the track, and they must pass a baton to their teammate with the goal of reaching the finish line in the fastest time
field events
events that take place on a field or similar area as opposed to those on the running track
jumping events
long jump, high jump, pole vault, triple jump
long jump
athletes combine speed, strength, and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a takeoff point
high jump
competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it
pole vault / pole jumping
an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar
triple jump
sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump

shot put
involving "putting" (pushing rather than throwing) a heavy spherical ball, the shot, as far as possible
