Total Solids
The sum of all solid materials found in wastewater, including suspended and dissolved solids.
Total Suspended Solids
The portion of total solids that can be trapped by a filter in water, often indicating the presence of contaminants.
Total Dissolved Solids
The portion of solids in a liquid that passes through a filter, typically consisting of ions and small particles.
Volatile Suspended Solids
Solid particles that can evaporate when heated, indicating organic matter content.
Fixed Suspended Solids
Solid particles that remain after the burning of volatile solids, indicating inorganic substances.
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
A measure of the amount of oxygen required by bacteria to decompose organic material in water over a period of time.
Seeding
The process of adding microorganisms (usually from unchlorinated domestic wastewater or surface water) to increase the population for biological treatment.
Oxygen Deficit
The amount of oxygen needed to oxidize organic matter, indicative of the pollution level in a water body.
Nutrient Impact
Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus can lead to accelerated growth of algae in water bodies, resulting in oxygen depletion.
Dilution Factor
The ratio of the volume of a sample to the volume of the dilution water, used in calculating BOD.
