usually diminishes/undermine the term, therefore overall it will imply the opposite of what it meant originally

when asked what would the term mean in inverted commas

• describe what it would do in context( undermine/ …)

• what the entire paragraph would now mean, using inverted commas - context of whole comp

OR 

writer questions or casts doubts of the term. 

• does not fully agree with term 

• there is ambivalence towards the idea
