Catabolic pathways
(catabolism)- chemical pathways that release energy stored in chemical bonds by breaking them to release the energy. → produces ATP
ATP
is an energy molecule that allows cells to do work
Fermentation pathways
DON’T use free oxygen so they only partially break apart the food molecules and do not produce much energy
Aerobic cellular respiration pathways
Uses free O2 to throughly oxidize or breaks apart the molecule and release much more energy → more efficient.
metabolism
the flow of electrons
coenzymes
molecules that aid in the proper functioning of enzymes.
glycolysis
first step: breaking down sugar- occurs in cytosol. glucose (6c) → split into (2) pyruvates (3c) + (4) ATP total (2) NADH.
Pre-Kreb
second step: matrix of mitochondria- (2) pyruvates are oxidized into (6) CO2, (2) ATP, (8) NADH & (2) FADH2.
electron transport system
inner mitochondria membrane; oxidation phosphylation, (34) ATP
each NADH produces ? ATP
3
each FADH2 produces ? ATP
2
aerobic
needs oxygen
NAD+, NADG
