What is fermentation?
Enables cells to produce ATP without oxygen, it is the partial breakdown of a sugar and yields less energy than cellular respiration
What are the two stages?
Glycolysis and regeneration of NAD+
Where does fermentation occur?
Cytosol
What is the energy yield of fermentation?
4 ATP total and 2 net
What is the main goal for fermentation?
To regenerate NAD+
What are the two types of fermentation?
Alcohol fermentation and lactic acid
What is alcohol fermentation?
The end product is ethanol; CO2 is released. Occurs in yeast and some bacteria
What is lactic acid fermentation?
The end product is lactic acid; no CO2 is produced. Occurs in skeletal muscles under low oxygen
What is the terminal electron acceptor for fermentation?
Acetaldehyde
What is the terminal electron acceptor for lactic acid fermentation?
Pyruvate
What is the common stage between fermentation and cellular respiration?
Glycolysis
