China became the second country in the world to adopt communism

first communist dictator of china. he gained support from peasants because he promised them their own land once the communists were brought to power

Attempt by Mao to modernize the industries and agriculture production of china. Peasants were forced to move onto large government farms. (similar to 5 year plan by Stalin)

Period in china where Mao used violent young soldiers (red guards) to eliminate all enemies he had within china.

Ruler after Mao. Deng changed the economy from a command/ communist economy (gov owned businesses). System is still used today
Tiananmen square protest
Protest where Chinese peacefully demanded democratic reforms, they wanted more say in gov. Deng called the army to end the protest. Many were killed or arrested.

Period after WW2 in which nations of Africa and Asia finally gained independence from European western nations

Belief that 2 countries should create societies that are based firmly on the rules of islam. Two countries that have established such societies are Iran and Afghanistan.

Islamic group that ruled Afghan. Created laws that were based strictly on Sharia (islamic law) Women had very few rights. They could not vote and had to dress conservative in public.

program in which Gorbachev allowed freedom of speech within the Soviet Union. Major step towards democracy

The Berlin Wall was finally torn down. This symbolized the end of the Cold War and the end of communism. West and east Germany were reunited to form a democratic country
