ADAPTIVE METALLURGY
converting final product from extractive metallurgy to user product
Mechanical Metallurgy
Foundry Science
Powder Metallurgy
Metal Joining and Assembly
Major Categories Under Adaptive Metallurgy (4)
MECHANICAL METALLURGY
area of adaptive metallurgy that deals with the response of metals to forces or loads
ROLLING
thickness reduction of a material passed between a pair or revolving rolls
most commonly used deformation process
FORGING
compressive stress is applied on the material that exceeds the flow of stress of the metal
application of stress is employed in succession or continuous manner
laterally between x and y axis
EXTRUSION
reduction of cross section of a metal block through forcing it flow through a die orifice under high pressure
application of force is on the side with large cross section
force is applied outside to the end
DRAWING
metal is pulled through a die with the use of tensile stress
application of force is on the exit side of the die or the side of smaller cross section
CASTING or FOUNDRY SCIENCE
molten metal is solidified in a mold which produces the metal object
the shape of the cavity determines the shape of the object
POWDER METALLURGY
powdered metal is being compacted that is then succeeded by heat treatment method to produce desired shape of the object
Mechanical Process/Joining
Adhesive Bonding
Soldering, Brazing, and Welding
Metal Joining Processes (3)
MECHANICAL JOINING
oldest method for joining metals
these methods only require minimum use of equipment in producing simplest forms
ADHESIVE BONDING
bonding metals together with the use of organic and inorganice compounds
SOLDERING
deals with bonding two or more metal pieces using another metal whose Tm < 800 oF and < Tm of the metal to be joined
BRAZING
deals with bonding two or more metal pieces using another metal whose Tm > 800 oF and < Tm of the metal to be joined
WELDING
a filler metal is used to join work pieces together which are heated to > Tm
