What is a Spar?

A spar is main supporting member of the wing

2
New cards

List & describe different types of spars

Solid, a solid piece of material; box-shaped, curved middle; partly hollow, hollow center; I beam, spar shaped like an i

3
New cards

Describe procedure for repairing elongated bolt holes in spar

Access dmg & refer to mfr. If not said laminate new section of spar especially if spar bolts are removed

4
New cards

What are composite materials

Combination of materials to obtain structural properties

5
New cards

Composites found?

Fuselage, flight control surfaces, propellers

6
New cards

What are adv of using composite

Stiffness, dimensional stability, and strength

7
New cards

Why important to know differences between diff fabrics in composite materials

Different fabrics have diff purpose. Some save weight, used to resign impregnate, or hot melt process

8
New cards

Defects in composite, what cause, say way to prevent

Delamination, resin starved areas, resign rich areas caused by mfr error and environmental factors. Prevented by adding more/less resin or be in a less humid environment

9
New cards

Kevlar? diff from fiberglass how?

Kevlar is aramid fibers that are lightweight strong and tough. Sized by weight rather than fibers.

10
New cards

Matrix fillers? are they allowed on all types of fiber mixes?

Materials added to resin and allowed on all types of fiber mixes. They are used to improve characteristics of matrix such as strength and viscosity (flox)

11
New cards

Epoxies and resin is? Does it completely give fibers the strength to make structure solid?

Thermosetting resin and part of a two part wet layup process. They did not give fibers the strength to make structure solid since it requires a fibrous material

12
New cards

Where fiber gets its strength

Depend on orientation sequence of the plies

13
New cards

wrap clock is?

Direction of fibers

14
New cards

Tell where orientation of fibers are in given roll of fabric?

Refer to diagram, specification sheet, mfr sheet, or orientation is zero as fabric comes off the roll.

15
New cards

Fasteners use on composite structures

Hi-LOK & HUCK-SPIN, EDDIE BOLT, AND BLIND
