simplify
To determine an equal expression that is in a simpler form.
variable
An unknown quantity represented by a letter.
greater than
Indicates that one quantity is larger than another.
less than
Indicates that one quantity is smaller than another.
coefficient
The number in front of a variable, multiplying by the variable.
constant
A fixed value or number that does not change in an expression, equation, or formula.
inequality
States that two values are not equal.
associative property
Indicates that different pairs of numbers can be grouped when adding or multiplying.
commutative property
Indicates that numbers can be added or multiplied in any order.
distributive property
Indicates that each term inside parentheses can be multiplied by the number outside the parentheses.
identity property
The sum of a number and zero is the number; the product of a number and one is the number.
inverse property
The sum of a number and its opposite is zero; the product of a number and its reciprocal is one.
like terms
Terms whose variables and exponents are the same.
expression
A mathematical phrase with numbers, variables, and operators. Does NOT have an equal sign.
prime number
A number with factors of only one and itself.
composite number
A whole number with factors other than one and itself.
factorization
The process of breaking down a number into all its prime factors.
base
In an expression with an exponent, it is the number being multiplied by itself.
exponent
Determines the number of times the base is multiplied by itself.
maximum
At most; is not more than; is not greater than.
minimum
At least; is not less than; is not smaller than.
