Headline
The title, the invitation to the reader to start reading
Layout/Image
The composition, and how the image relates to large elements like Headlines in creating a composition
Display Type
The special type the Headline is
Kicker
The little short text above the Headline (or next to it)
Deck
A longish caption that acts as the bridge between the Headline and the Body Copy (which the body copy is just the blocks of text yes)
Byline
Small line that describes author credits
Lead
How exactly the deck transitions into the first paragraph, like do they use old lettering to draw you? maybe large text? a design element?
Nut Graf
The ‘thesis’ of the article, so this is like the Lead except the sentence itself.
Baseline
The alignment of the lines, make sure they’re even with each other across paragraphs
Subhead
Little headings for the paragraphs
Pull Quote
Quotes that are emphasized to be larger and important
Header/Footer
Sort of like a little brand thing of the magazine, it gets put in a margin as something related to a category of it
Folio
The page no. and any other misc info like a URL
Running head/feet
Indicates a chapter or section in the magazine, think of how school books did it
Caption and Credit
Little captions inside of an image or around it that tells where it came from
Bleed
The very edges of the spread
Double truck/runaround
The way elements are layered to create a 3D feel on a 2D plane
Safe zone/margins and Creep
The space within the margins, the outside edges where text cannot get too close to the edge unless it is a running head or footer. The middle of the spread is the creep.
Columns
The paragraphs of text organized as pillars/blocks
Gutter/Alley
Space between the columns
Downrule
Visual definers of column spaces
Pane/Sidebar
A sort of ‘side story’ of the article that relates to the article itself in some way, but odesn’t exactly continue it
Eyeline
A back element integrated with other design elements. it runs through the spread.
White Space
Empty areas in a magazine spread
Drop Cap
A large letter that can work as a good entry point in the design
