Echinodermata
A phylum of marine animals characterized by their radial symmetry, internal skeleton made of ossicles, and water vascular system.
Coelomates
Animals that have a true coelom, a body cavity lined by mesoderm.
Protostomes
Animals in which the blastopore develops into the mouth during embryonic development.
Deuterostomes
Animals in which the blastopore develops into the anus during embryonic development.
Water Vascular System
A unique system found in echinoderms consisting of water-filled canals used for locomotion through tube feet.
Asteroidea
Class of echinoderms known as sea stars, characterized by their loose arrangement of ossicles and madreporite connecting to the water vascular system.
Ophiuroidea
Class of echinoderms known as brittle stars, featuring thick ossicles and capable of rapid crawling.
Crinoidea
Class of echinoderms that includes sea lilies and feather stars, often characterized by their stalked or unattached forms.
Echinoidea
Class of echinoderms that includes sea urchins and sand dollars, with ossicles fused into a solid shell.
Holothuroidea
Class of echinoderms known as sea cucumbers, distinguished by their soft bodies and reduced ossicles.
Chordata
A phylum comprising animals characterized by having a dorsal hollow nerve cord, notochord, pharyngeal slits, and a postanal tail.
Urochordata
Subphylum of chordates that includes tunicates and sea squirts, often sessile as adults.
Cephalochordata
Subphylum of chordates that includes lancelets, small fishlike organisms that burrow in sand.
Vertebrata
Subphylum of chordata characterized by a distinct head and a vertebral column replacing the notochord.
Amphibia
Class of terrestrial tetrapods that includes frogs, toads, and salamanders, requiring water for reproduction.
Reptilia
Class of terrestrial animals with dry skin covered in scales, laying water-tight eggs with internal fertilization.
Aves
Class of animals known as birds, characterized by feathers and homeothermic regulation of body temperature.
Mammalia
Class of animals characterized by hair, the presence of mammary glands, and homeothermic temperature maintenance.
