Nucleus

contains genetic information (DNA). It is the "control center

Plasma membrane/ Cell membrane

It protects the cell and provides stability. It is selectively permeable and regulates the movement of molecules in and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm (cytosol)

Gel-like mixture inside cells that contains organelles and provides a medium for chemical reactions to take place.

Nucleolus

site of ribosome synthesis

Ribosomes

made up of RNA and proteins; function in protein synthesis

Mitochondria

often referred to as the 'powerhouse' of the cell. Function in ATP production

Chloroplast

contains the green pigment chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis.

Golgi body/Golgi apparatus

processes and packages proteins and lipid molecules, especially proteins that are to be exported from the cell.

Endoplasmic reticulum

membrane system either 'smooth' or 'rough' depending on the presence of ribosomes; play a role in the synthesis of lipids and proteins.

Cell wall

composed of cellulose and lying just outside the cell membrane; The cell wall has many important functions in a cell such as protection, structure, and support.
