Describe the structure and function of the HIV envelope
Outer membrane stolen from host cells
Dotted in glycoprotein spikes
GP120 recognizes and attaches to CD4 in helper T Complexes
Complexes to bring GP41 close to bind CCR5
What is the T Cell count required to diagnosis AIDS?
Less than 200 cells per uL
What actions of HIV drug exist?
Entrance Inhibitors
RNA Inhibitors
Integrase Inhibitors
Protease Inhibitors
Describe the Course of HIV
Acute HIV: Right off the bat, viral load skyrockets and CD4 count gets cut in half, lasts weeks
Chronic HIV: Antibody response develops, viral load gets cut and the CD4 count is able to recover somewhat, lasts months to years
AIDS: Eventually the CD4 count is weakened, and it eventually kills the host
Describe the Interplay of HIV Development
High load, High count: Rare
High load, Low count: AIDS
Low load, High count, Asymptomatic
Low load, Low count Rare (late in life)
What methods are used for HIV Detection
ELISA and Western Blot (more specific)
Describe the current HIV Statistics
91.4 million infections total
44.1 million deaths, 40.8 million survivors
Of those, 31.6 million on ART (77%)
630,000 new deaths in 2024, on the down
1.3 million new infections in 2024, on the down
87% of patients aware of their status, 5.3 million don’t know
